Ball Champion. Many German and European Championships, 2001 World
Pool Championship runner-up.
One of the world’s premier tournament players, the soft-spoken
Souquet has been at the top of the hill for nearly 15 years now
and his powers of concentration and methodical shot-making show
no signs of diminishing. Despite a resumé steeped in titles,
the Kaiser’s form this year has been not far short of sensational.
A win in the 9 Ball division of the gamblers’ enclave
of the Derby City Classic in January got the ball rolling. Souquet
then followed that up with the European 9 Ball Championship in
Brandenberg, Germany in March and then in May he won the BCA
Open, reckoned to be one of the games majors, for the second
time. Souquet went through Feijen, Cory Deuel, Reyes and Johnny
Archer in successive matches and there aren’t too many
pool players alive capable of doing that.
His current form, coupled with the fact that he has a wonderful
track record in the Masters – he won the event in ’94, ’96, ’00
and ’02 – make Souquet a red-hot contender for this
year’s title and his first round match against Efren Reyes
should be a corker. |
