Foldes, along with one or two other youngsters, represent the
bright new future of European pool. Coming from Pĕcs in
southern Hungary, this 21 year-old has a superb pedigree having
taken the 2003 WPA World Pool Championship for Juniors at Willingen
in Germany. Foldes recorded a 9 – 5 victory over Taiwan’s
Chang Jun-ling to take the gold, having previously taken care
of wins over America’s Justin Bergmann and Hubert Lopotko
of Poland.
Earlier, Foldes signified his intentions by winning the 9-ball
division at the Junior European Championships in 2001 and 2002.
Since then, he has bridged the gap to the seniors as he has established
himself on the EuroTour with some solid finishes over the past
18 months.
Last July, the Hungarian had an excellent World Championship, taking
out defending champion Alex Pagulayan in the last 32 before going
out narrowly 11 – 10 to Nick van den Berg in the last 16.
This is Foldes first appearance in the World Pool Masters and he
gets a marvellous opportunity to take revenge on his Dutch WPC
nemesis as they meet in the opening round. |
