There can’t have been many 16 year-olds in the history
of any sport who could claim to be a double world champion in
their first full time competitive year. That’s what happened
to Taiwanese terror Wu Chia-ching last year, though, as he created
pool history. In July, he ran undefeated through the knock-out
rounds to become the youngest ever winner of the WPA World Pool
Championship and he followed that up in the Fujeirah in November
when he beat Nick van den Berg in the championship match to takes
the WPA 8 Ball crown.
In Kaohsiung last summer, overshadowed by his more established
countrymen, Wu took out some of the best names in world pool
en route to the final. Chamat, Hohmann and Manalo all fell to
the fearless young potter from Taipei.
It was countryman Kuo Po-cheng who stood between Wu and ultimate
glory, though. Trailing 12 – 16 in the race to 17 final,
all looked lost for Wu but a mistake from Kuo allowed him to run
the last four racks for the title. This will be the ‘Little
Genius’s’ second visit to the Masters – he lost
8-7 to Thomas Engert in the quarters last year. |
